How we got started
After three years of hard work in dinner theater, I was starting to feel worn out and was beyond tired. The price of fame and fortune was high, with eight shows, six days a week and two performances on Saturdays and Sundays. My son, Sean, was six months old and I felt like I was missing out on all the precious moments of having a newborn. The performing schedule was taking its toll as I was gone most of the time, and I began to resent every moment I spent away from my family.
One particular weekend at the theater, an English gentlemen showed up with a camera in hand. He was a personable Brit named Robert and once we got chatting, we hit it off immediately. He told me he was looking to franchise the photography idea he had and to get in touch if I knew anyone who might be interested. When I got home that evening, I told my wife Amy about meeting Robert and mentioned this potential new photographic opportunity, adding that it was something I could see myself doing and would give me more time at home.
The following week I bought my first two cameras from Robert, quit my job at the theater and started Cheek to Cheek Photography. I felt like I had found my true calling in life. In the early years I was doing promotional photography in restaurants and nightclubs and eventually graduated to school photography and then exclusively to families, on location.
In this new-found profession I had more free time to spend with my growing family. I was able to not just to watch Sean and my daughter, Moira, grow and evolve as people, but to be an active participant in their early years. Moving into photography and starting my own business gave me the freedom to be there for my family. Instead of being at the mercy of the strict theater schedule, I could now attend events at school, go on new adventures, and just be more present in their lives. Photography is my dream profession, and something I will love and do for the rest of my life.
