In 31 years of doing children’s and family portraits I have a saying….… “nobody ever regrets doing the family portrait, they only regret not doing it”. As we all know life is moving on, with or without us. There are moments of celebration or memory that we want to capture; an infant birth, they’re walking now, when did they develop their own personalities? Or the fact that they are growing too fast and babies become little boys and girls, how did that happen? Oh my goodness, they’re going off to school soon and will be leaving the nest, where did the time go? When did the grand-kids get to be so big? Or an expanding or contracting family with people who have joined us or those dear ones who have left us, all of these significant moments of which to take advantage. In many cases when these moments sneak up on us, we realize if we don’t capture them now, we never will. If you stop and think about it, these times can be the most emotional moments of our lives and the reason we want to capture and remember. In much the same way, when a song from your past comes on you know exactly where you were and what you were doing at that moment in time. To a certain degree the portrait is the “song of your life”. You remember the experience, where you were, what you were doing and the emotions that it brings back as a result. These are the reasons why we do it, but there are also the reasons why we don’t. Reasons that make us pause or hesitate and miss the moment. “I want to wait until the kids are older,” “I’d like to lose weight,” “we’re waiting for the right time” or you’ve done it before with disappointing results. Any number of reasons are valid as to why it doesn’t happen. This is the main reason we sit down with you prior to your session so we can design this together and determine what’s important to you. The more emotion that we build into the portrait the greater the significance it will have for you.
